The process of becoming a notary public or renewing a notary commission varies per state. To help ensure your application gets accepted the first time, we’ve compiled a list of helpful tips to keep in mind while completing the application process.

AS - Application Acceptance Tips

The procedure for of becoming a notary public or renewing a notary commission varies per state. Some states require references, some may require a copy of your driver’s license, and some states even require the completion of an education course. If any requirements are not met, your application cannot be submitted for approval by the state’s commissioning officer.

To help ensure your application gets accepted the first time, we’ve compiled a list of helpful tips to keep in mind while completing the application process.

1. Print clearly

You would be surprised by how many illegible notary public applications we receive. Computer printed or block letters and dark ink help with readability for the state. If a single letter or number gets entered into the system incorrectly, it can slow down the notary application process considerably.

2. Complete the application in its entirety

Even if you are renewing, your application must be completely filled out. No section should be left blank unless expressly stated as an option.

3. List a physical home address

You must provide your physical home address. P.O. boxes or places of business may be allowed in addition to your physical home address, but not in lieu of it.

4. Make sure the bond is signed with your legal name

The name listed on the bond and application must match. No excuses. No exceptions.

5. Submit a full payment

A notary bonding agency cannot submit your application to the appropriate commissioning officer without collecting the appropriate required filing fees. Please make sure you include your payment in its entirety when you send in your notary application. If we have to contact you to remit your payment, it may tack on extra time to the application process.

6. REVIEW your application before submitting or mailing

Pay careful attention to your notary application instructions.

Be sure to include everything that is required. Copies of identification cards, education course completion certificates, and references are all examples of what could be asked for.

Turnaround time for notary public applications is dependent upon the state where the application is submitted, but it also depends on you. We make every effort to process your notary commission as quickly as possible. By following the tips listed above, we can work together to make that happen sooner rather than later!
